Do you know what it takes to keep your cat happy and healthy? Taking care of Fluffy’s basic needs—food, water, shelter, and a litterbox—is quite simple, but kitties actually need much more TLC than that. Here, a Rochester, NY vet lists some common cat care mistakes.
Lack of Stimulation
Cats are very curious and playful by nature. Your furry little pal will get bored and unhappy with nothing to do. Make sure Fluffy has lots of fun toys, and a window with a good view. It’s also important to play with your kitty regularly. This will provide your pet with exercise, entertainment, and mental stimulation, which are all great for her.
Not Enough Veterinary Care
Keeping up with your cat’s veterinary care is very important! Fluffy should be microchipped and spayed or neutered while she is still a kitten. Your furball will also need regular exams, vaccinations, and parasite control. In between visits, watch for signs of illness, such as hiding, vomiting, poor grooming, and/or unusual behavior or vocalizations. Call your vet immediately if you notice anything unusual.
Our feline buddies are certainly adorable, but they aren’t purrfect. Fluffy has a few bad habits, such as scratching inappropriately and jumping on counters. Never punish your pet for misbehaving, however. Cats don’t really understand the concept of punishment. You may just end up scaring your furball, or confusing her. Focus on rewarding your kitty for being good. To curb unwanted behaviors, squirt your cat with water, or make a loud noise to startle her.
Letting Fluffy Roam
Fluffy may think of herself as a ferocious little predator, but in actuality, she’s very small, and is vulnerable to many different dangers. Cars, predators, weather, and wild animals are just a few of the things that could threaten your furball in the Great Outdoors. Kitties that go outside are also much more likely to get lost or injured, or to pick up harmful parasites. Your pet will be much safer and healthier staying indoors!
We know, Fluffy will still be adorable if she’s a bit pudgy. However, obesity is very bad for your pet’s health! Overfeeding and improper feeding are definitely on the list of common cat care mistakes. Ask your vet for nutritional advice.
