Are you planning on having a lot of visitors over the holidays? It’s always great to reconnect with friends and family members at this special time of year! However, our feline friends aren’t always thrilled about having guests. Read on as a local Webster, NY vet offers tips on helping guests and cats get along.
Make sure your feline buddy is putting her best paw forward by giving her a good brushing before your company arrives. The more fur you grab with a brush, the less there will be on your furniture! It’s also a good idea to thoroughly dust and vacuum your home. To get fur off upholstered furniture, use a rubber dish glove, a squeegee, or a damp sponge. Changing your air filter will also help. Last but not least, don’t forget to clean the litterbox!
Many people are allergic to our feline pals. If you know or suspect that any of your guests have allergies, set out some tissue boxes and stock up on OTC medications. (Note: cats seem to have an unspoken rule that dictates they must immediately approach anyone who is allergic to them, but that’s another topic.)
You may have to clarify a few basic ground rules, especially if your furry buddy is still a frisky kitten or has special care needs. For example, you may want to let your company know that Fluffy isn’t allowed to go outside, or that she shouldn’t be offered table scraps. If you’re having young children over, make sure they don’t inadvertently give your furball something that isn’t safe for her.
Never underestimate Fluffy’s ability to get into mischief. Kitties are very small, and can easily get underfoot. You don’t want your cute pet running out an open door, or getting her tail caught beneath a rocking chair. Keep a close eye on your furry buddy!
Are your visitors going to be staying with you overnight? If so, you may want to advise them to keep the guest room door closed. Otherwise, there’s a good chance they’ll find Fluffy sleeping on their suitcases or snoozing on their bed. Cats really don’t care much about respecting people’s privacy!
